Fall in Avila Beach: The Coast’s Best Kept Secret Gets Even Better

There’s a reason locals love Avila Beach in the fall. The summer crowds thin out, the light turns golden, and the town settles into the kind of easy, unhurried pace that made people fall in love with it in the first place. And this year, there’s even more reason to make the coast your fall destination.

We’re talking a rodeo on the beach, a mac and cheese festival, an outrigger canoe expo, a gala at the aquarium, a half marathon that finishes steps from the Pacific, and Friday night farmers’ markets with live music running all the way through mid-October.

The days are still warm. The pier is waiting. And Avila Beach is having one of its best seasons yet. Come see what all the buzz is about.

The Farmers’ Market Is Officially Extended

By popular demand, the Avila Beach Farmers’ Market has extended its 24th season all the way through October 16th. That means fresh produce, local food booths, live music and the best Friday night energy on the Central Coast for a few more weeks than expected.

The promenade comes alive every Friday from 4–8pm, and the fall lineup is stacked: Big Foot Country, Skylites, Red Oak Country, Lion Remain, Groove Collective, Electric Lavender Train, and Eric & The One Love Bomb are all still to come. Free trolley rides and $9 parking make it easy.

Give Back to the Coast at the Creeks to Coast Cleanup

Avila Beach gives us a lot. Here’s a chance to return the favor.

ECOSLO’s 21st Annual SLO County Creeks to Coast Cleanup runs Saturday, September 19th from 9am to noon, and this year the effort spans the entire county, from the coastline to inland creeks, lakes and parks. Since 2005 it has removed over 7,000 pounds of waste from local waterways.

Sign up for a cleanup site near Avila Beach and spend the morning giving a little something back to the coast.

The Mac Is Back

Thirteen years in, and the Avila Beach Mac & Cheese Festival is still one of the most anticipated events of the year.

On September 19th, over 2,500 mac and cheese lovers descend on Avila Beach for an afternoon of the best the Central Coast has to offer. Top chefs, restaurants and caterers go head to head for the title, and you get to vote for your favorite. Add beer, wine and spirits from local wineries and breweries, live music all afternoon, and an oceanside setting nobody else can touch.

This is a 21+ event running 2–6pm, and tickets sell out quickly every year. Photo by @themacfest.

Breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, a shorefront rodeo arena and live music to follow. Doors open at 4pm and the event starts at 5pm on both Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26. There is nothing quite like watching outrigger canoes cut through open water, and this October you can see it from the sand at Avila Beach.

The Pale Kai Outrigger Canoe Expo returns October 9–10, hosted by the Pale Kai Outrigger Canoe Club and the Avila Beach Tourism Alliance. Friday, October 9 opens with early registration and a paddler happy hour; the main event takes over the water on Saturday, October 10.

There is no finish line quite like this one.

Cuesta College’s City to the Sea Half Marathon starts in downtown San Luis Obispo and takes runners past local landmarks, through scenic country backroads and along the Bob Jones Trail, finishing at the edge of the Pacific in Avila Beach. The 5K hugs the coast, with 75% of the route offering views of the beach, harbor and ocean — and sea lions, otters and whales have all been known to make an appearance.

Both races start at 7:00am on Sunday, October 18th. The 5K is already sold out, and half marathon spots are going fast.
