It’s a new year with plenty of exploration to look forward to in Avila Beach. Be sure to add these 10 activities to your list for 2022!
Bike or Walk along the Bob Jones Trail
The sea breeze in your hair will put a smile on your face! Rent bikes or saunter along the paved Bob Jones trail for a relaxing escape to nature. The trail starts across the street from the parking lot on Ontario Road, right off Highway 101, and ends in downtown Avila Beach. It’s great for all levels of hiking and biking and makes for an enjoyable, smooth, and (mostly) flat ride with trail benches sprinkled throughout. Dogs are welcome on the trail but please pick up after them!
Soak in Local Hot Springs
Find pure bliss in one of two legendary Avila Beach Hot Springs- Sink into Sycamore Mineral Springs’ famous hot tubs, staggered amid the trees, as well as the Oasis Lagoon swimming pool. In keeping with a longstanding history of healing weary travelers, Sycamore Mineral Springs also offers luxurious spa treatments and yoga classes.
Along with a thermal soaking pool, Avila Hot Springs offers a heated swimming pool with waterslides, poolside service, and an arcade. No matter how you spend your time at Avila Hot Springs, it’s guaranteed to be relaxing, rejuvenating, and FUN!
Visit the Swing at Point San Luis Lighthouse
The Point San Luis Lighthouse is a must-see in and of itself, tucked back behind the hills of Avila Beach. A tree swing on the property faces the ocean for what is the most relaxing, romantic spot around.
For a fun and unique way to access the Point San Luis Lighthouse, get there by paddle! Connect with a local kayaking outfitter for a tour of the Avila Beach coastline, including a stop at the beach on Point San Luis.
Paddle-board or Kayak on Avila’s tranquil waters
Nothing compares to experiencing California’s Central Coast from the ocean. Whether it’s on a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard, the views of green rolling hills and the quaint seaside town always wow. Bring your own board or kayak, or rent from one of Avila Beach’s trusted outfitters. Even better? Sign up for a guided tour, and experience the hidden spots only locals usually get to see.
Go Whale Watching
The grey whales migrate through Avila Beach each year from January through April. Embark on a local whale-watching guided trip or bring your binoculars and scan the horizon watching for their breaching and blowing.
Dine with an Ocean View
There is no shortage of enticing oceanfront restaurants in Avila Beach. Indulge in local cuisine while taking in the sights, sounds, and, smells of our picturesque Central Coast beach town. For some ideas on where to dine, visit our Dining guide.

No matter their age, visitors and locals alike choose the Avila Valley Barn for a cozy, down-home good time.
Visit the Central Coast Aquarium
The Aquarium was born from a passion for the sea and community and is the perfect place to learn about the complex ecosystem in the waters off of Avila Beach. The aquarium offers a fun, hands-on experience that fosters education and encourages stewardship.
