Do I need a permit to have my wedding on the beach in Avila?

Weddings are allowed on Avila Beach, but because it's a public beach, you can not "reserve" an area. Everything at the beach is on a first come first serve basis. The Port San Luis Harbor District Office does issue special event permits for large groups (anything over 50 is advisable). This ensures they will not issue a permit for the same place at the same time, but it still does not reserve anything and people cannot rope areas off.

Weddings are considered a special event and all the District Office does is issue the permit. The rest is up to the permittee. The District does not allow amplified sound, generators, nothing that requires cords to run along the beach, no vehicles on the beach (not even for set up), no enclosed tents, no confetti (not even eco friendly), rice or any non natural material. Rule of thumb is anything you bring, must be taken with you when you leave.

The permit fee can be purchased from the Port San Luis Harbor District office. Their phone number is 805-595-5400, or visit their web site for additional information: www.portsanluis.com
